Emami East Bengal were up 2-0 and thought they had three points in their pocket against Bangladesh Army in a Group A match of the Durand Cup at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.

But the visitors had other ideas and two goals — in the 88th minute and seventh minute of injury time — left East Bengal’s hopes in shambles. In a group which also has Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Punjab FC, Carles Cuadrat’s men now face the arduous task of raising their game by new notches in the next two matches.

The first goal came in the 34th minute when Kamrul Islam pulled back Nishu Kumar inside the Bangladesh penalty box. Saul Crespo made no mistake from the spot.

Then just before the break, East Bengal got the second. Javier Siverio headed in a Harmanjot Khabra floater from the right. Nishu Kumar saw the red card in the 67th minute and the visitors sensed a chance. In the 88th minute, Shariar Emon pulled one back for Bangladesh’s first goal of the tournament.

It came off a Mehedi Hasan throw-in from the left-flank, which took a couple of headers on the way to land in the path of Emon. The lanky forward struck a left footer which beat East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukan Gill.

As the game went into injury time, East Bengal looked tired with 10 men and Bangladesh mounted an attack through Emon. He crossed to Mamun whose shot was deflected back by goalkeeper Gill.

Meraj Pradhan pounced on the loose ball and shot back towards goal which Gill again managed to thwart feebly for one last time, before Meraj muscled it in, to secure a point for his team.

In Guwahati, Hyderabad FC rallied to hold Delhi FC 1-1. Himanshu Jangra scored for Delhi in the sixth minute, while Ramhlunchhunga equalised in the 57th minute.
