Construction on a mansion belonging to Brazilian footballer Neymar Jr was halted on Thursday due to environmental violations, officials said on Thursday, adding that the high-profile athlete could face a fine of at least $1m.
The residence is located in the coastal town of Mangaratiba on the south coast of Rio de Janeiro state.
The residence, which was acquired in 2016, is said to sit on a 2.5 acre plot that includes a spa and a helipad. Neymar is looking to build a lavish home for his family in the region.
The luxury project violated rules regarding use and movement of fresh water sources, rock and sand, the local government said in a statement.
The local mayor’s office said in a statement: “The next step will be to make an assessment of the irregularities found and issue a fine which, according to estimates and in view of the environmental damage caused, will not be less than five million reais (about $1 million).”
Officials said that during their visit to the property to stop construction, the athlete’s father, Neymar da Silva Santos, insulted them. He was subsequently threatened with arrest but was ultimately not detained.
A Neymar family spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
