While Manchester United fans are protesting the Glazer family’s ownership of the club, a 4-2 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool has only added insult to injury for the Red Devils.
Last night, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah ensured Liverpool won their first game at Old Trafford since 2014. With the win, Liverpool will stay hopeful of breaking into the top four of the Premier League table. This also was the first ever victory at Old Trafford for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
How It Went
Manchester United started off with an early goal as Bruno Fernandes scored via a Nathaniel Phillips deflection in the 10th minute. But Liverpool found their feet soon enough, after forward Diogo Jota’s flick levelled the game for the Reds in the 34th minute. The match kept slipping away from the Red Devils as Firmino headed one in to put his team ahead right before half time. And by the 47th minute, Firmino took full advantage of a lacklustre United defence to score Liverpool’s third goal.
United tried to make amends, as Marcus Rashford cashed in on an Edinson Cavani through ball to score in the 68th minute. But then the rest of the 22 minutes were not enough for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to pull things back. Mohammed Salah completed a stunning counter attack and scored in the 90th minute, making his 200th appearance for Liverpool memorable.
“They deserved the win. We conceded goals in key moments of the game. We didn't build on the momentum or break up their momentum. We gave them at least two goals really. Then we scored again, had a massive chance, key moments went against us,” United manager Solskjaer said while addressing the media after the match.
Liverpool next face West Bromwich Albion FC on May 16, while United meet Fulham on May 18.
Real Madrid beat Granada
Real Madrid have left no stone unturned to turn the La Liga title race into a complete thriller. Beating Granada 4-1 in an away game last night, Zinedine Zidane’s men moved to second place in the table, two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.
Luka Modric, Rodrygo, Alvaro Odriozola and Karim Benzema scored one each in a one-sided affair. The solitary Granada goal came in the 71st minute via Jorge Molina, but by then it was too late for the home team.
“It's not just about scoring goals. We played well in defence, too. It was a really complete game. We didn't get overrun at 2-1 and scored quickly after and that shows what character this side have. It was a great win against a tough opponent at a difficult place to come to. We are going to give our all in the two remaining games, until La Liga is finished,” Zizou said after the game.
Both Real and Atletico will next take the field on May 16. While Real will face Athletic Club, Atletico will lock horns with Osasuna.
