The Tartan Army went berserk when Scotland held old rivals England to a goalless draw in their last group stage match. Some flag-waving supporters even danced on the streets of Glasgow. Now one can only imagine what will happen if the Scots qualify for the round of 16 after a return to international football in 23 years. Steve Clarke’s men take on 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia, who are looking for their first win this edition. In the other match, England will look to dislodge Group D toppers Czech Republic at the Wembley Stadium.

Here’s what’s in store for tonight:

Scotland vs Croatia (12:30 am IST, Wednesday)
Venue: Hampden Park

Scotland have one last opportunity to harness the energy of their fans versus Luka Modric’s men in Glasgow. Both teams are in desperate need of a win to have any chance of advancing. The Scots will have a home crowd of about 12,000 urging the players on. “It's great to see that our performance and the point against England brought a lot of confidence and smiles to the faces of the country,” Scotland midfielder Stuart Armstrong said. “To build on that and to give them something to cheer about on Tuesday is our ambition and our focus.”

While Scotland worked hard in defence against England and even in the loss to the Czech Republic, the finishing remains a problem.

“It would be a problem if we weren't creating any chances. I think we have had quite a few chances, a lot of opportunities. So, it's just those fine margins that will take us to the next level and get us a goal which we do need on Tuesday," Armstrong told reporters on Monday.

The Scots will have to play without Billy Gilmour. The 20-year-old midfielder, who made his first start for the national team against England and was named player of the match by UEFA, will miss the game against Croatia after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Croatia have had similar scoring problems at the tournament, losing their first match to England 1-0 and then salvaging their game against the Czechs with a 1-1 draw. Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic has been facing questions about his future with the national team in the buildup to Tuesday’s match. Croatian media have been especially critical of Dalic's team selection for the second match.

Players to watch out for:

Coach Dalic will hope for Luka Modric to mobilise things further after winning the player of the match award against Czech Republic. With Billy Gilmour gone, Scotland will have to rely on Scott McTominay to keep an eye on the Croatia captain.

England vs Czech Republic (12:30 pm IST, Wednesday)

Venue: Wembley Stadium

A couple of days contemplating why England haven’t already advanced at the European Championship allowed Raheem Sterling to fully assess the team’s shortcomings. How could a stalemate with Scotland have been prevented?

“With the ball we could have shown a bit more personality and dominated the game more with the ball,” the England striker said.

“As a team we need to know where to identify that and take control. We can't get brought into playing a certain way when we want to use the ball a little better.” Starting on Tuesday, when they face the Czech Republic in its Group D finale.

“I do feel there's a bit of an over-reaction," Sterling said. “I just feel there's more of a panic on the outside than inside the building. At the same time, the players who have been at a few tournaments, who have huge experience, try to help the other ones.”

England can’t even blame unfamiliar surroundings for being held to a 0-0 draw by Scotland on Friday after beating Croatia 1-0. All of their group games are at Wembley Stadium.

There will be a return to their home stadium for the round of 16 if England can win and dislodge the Czech Republic from first place. There would be a trip to Copenhagen if England stay in second place.

England coach Gareth Southgate has been trying to relax his players by running through past group-stage records of successful teams. Take Portugal, which drew all three games at the start of Euro 2016 and then won the trophy.

"He always shows us best possible scenarios, worst possible scenarios it's not the end of the world," Sterling said. "He's just showing us in previous tournaments that it's not every team that wins their first few games that goes on to win.

"Sometimes teams that have drawn their first two games have gone on to win so we've just got to stay motivated, be happy and enjoy our football."

Sterling hasn't always been able to enjoy his soccer this season. The winger ended up as a Premier League winner again with Manchester City but with frustrations. He played in 31 of the 38 games and had to come off the bench in three of them, netting 10 goals.

Sterling has borne the brunt of criticism over the years playing for England, particularly in the last-16 exit to Iceland at Euro 2016. The player singled out for England's struggles against Scotland is Harry Kane.

Southgate has already confirmed that the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot winner won't be dropped for the match against the Czech Republic despite not scoring in both Euro 2020 games or getting a shot on target.

“We as a team, of course, need to produce more for him, more crosses in the box," Sterling said. "He will be the first person to be disappointed but at the same I know when it's crunch time Harry will be there, that's for sure."

The Euro 2020 scoring chart is topped by an expected name and a less renowned forward. Joining Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo with three goals is Patrik Schick ahead of the Czech Republic striker's trip to London.

“We know England have massive quality and top star players,” Schick said. “But in their first games they did not create too many chances, maybe they are struggling a little bit in attack.

"But as a team they will be always tough to play against. So we have to prepare as well as we can and of course we want to win, get three points and secure qualification from this group.”

It was at Wembley that the Czechs came closest to adding to their 1976 European title, losing the Euro 1996 final to Germany. By winning their opening match against Scotland, they have already achieved more than Euro 2016 when they failed to advance from the group stage.

Four points should be enough to be at least one of the four best third-place teams that advances to the round of 16. England are behind the Czechs on goal difference.

Players to watch out for:

With a dismal start to Euro 2020, Harry Kane will look to find the back of the net, while Raheem Sterling will look to make an impact once again. With Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount in isolation after coming in contact with Gilmour, coach Southgate has reasons to worry. The Czech’s will hope Patrik Schick to continue his outstanding form, as well as captain Vladimir Darida who can work wonders in the midfield.
