Rohit Sharma’s chances of boarding Team India’s chartered flight to Sydney brightened on Saturday after the powers-that-be took stock of his performance in the two matches for Mumbai Indians since his return from injury.

“We can say Rohit will be on the flight to Sydney unless he experiences any fresh discomfort after the IPL final on Tuesday. The meeting on Saturday afternoon discussed the report of Mumbai Indians’ physio Sizwe Hadebe and Team India physio Nitin Patel’s observations,” sources told The Telegraph.

“There’s a feeling that Rohit hasn’t been tested fully during the two matches. He scored 4 against Sunrisers Hyderabad and was dismissed for a duck versus Delhi Capitals. The physio feels he wasn’t stretched to the hilt to prove that the left hamstring was functioning normally.

“Though he fielded in the outfield and within the 30 yards circle, he didn’t have to exert himself, say when it comes to running between the wickets. If he comes out unscathed in the final, he will be travelling with the team. The decision will be announced, may be on the day of the final,” sources revealed.

Rohit’s progress is being constantly “monitored” by Hadebe and Patel and so far the progress has been “encouraging”. “We are keeping fingers crossed since his injury doesn’t seem to be as bad as it was assumed earlier,” the source said.

There’s a school of thought that Rohit should travel with the side even if he is not available for the limited overs leg. In that case, he can stay with the squad and do the rehab process while regaining fitness for the Test matches.

The selection committee had earlier gone by the Mumbai Indians physio’s report, which was forwarded to the Board by Patel. It didn’t mention any time-frame for Rohit’s recovery but only noted that he was unavailable and his progress will be monitored.

If Rohit is there for the limited overs leg, comprising three T20Is and three ODIs, he will get back the vice-captaincy. The selectors had named KL Rahul as Kohli’s deputy in Rohit’s absence.

“Rahul was the stand-in vice-captain. If Rohit plays, it’s only logical that the decision will be revoked. It’s the same process if someone had stepped into the captain’s shoes. There shouldn’t be any confusion,” the source said.

Like Rohit, Ishant Sharma is also likely to travel with the squad after suffering an abdominal muscle tear in the IPL. He returned to the NCA in Bangalore and has recovered.
