Deep has faith in Wriddhiman Saha

“Look, it’s challenging. If it is challenging for the slips, it is the same for me as well"

Visibility of the pink ball, especially during twilight, could be a concern for wicketkeepers as well in the Day-Night pink-ball Test beginning at Eden Gardens on Friday.

“Look, it’s challenging. If it is challenging for the slips, it is the same for me as well,” India wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha said on Wednesday.

Adapting to anything new takes time, but former India wicketkeepers feel Saha would not face much problem in dealing with the pink ball.

“I never played with the pink ball. But I have heard about its character. It is a little different from the red and the white balls.

“Wicketkeepers need to get their basics right and as the game progresses, it should become easier to handle,” Nayan Mongia told The Telegraph on Wednesday.

“Wriddhiman is a very good wicketkeeper and I don’t think he will face too much of a problem with the pink ball,” he said. Deep Dasgupta, who has seen Saha from his formative years, believes the ball may be different but that’s unlikely to create any problem for the latter.

“Players are used to playing Test matches with the red ball. When you play with the pink ball, you need to change the mindset first. If you spend sometime with the pink ball, that might help you to get accustomed to it,” Dasgupta said.

“The pink ball is different than the red or the white ball. It skids on... When it gets old, it would be difficult to grip and a bit tough to handle.

“You have to be at your best when you deal with it…

“Wriddhiman is a very good ’keeper, so I don’t think he will face any problem to handle the pink ball. But at the same time, everybody needs to adapt quickly.

“Nobody knows how the ball will behave. When it’s new, it will behave differently… the older ball might be soft and it has to be dealt with differently. When twilight sets in, it has to be handled with care,” Dasgupta added.

According to Ajay Ratra, the match would be interesting. “The game will be an experience for everyone. We are used to matches with the red and white balls, but everyone needs to adapt.

“Wriddhiman is one of the best wicketkeepers of the world at the moment. I don’t think he will face problems as such. Yes the ball will have a bit of a carry, but they have trained with the pink ball and some players have played with it in domestic matches.

“So I don’t think it will create any problem for our wicketkeeper at least,” Ratra remarked.
