Steve Smith seems to be doing everything right in this Ashes series.
On Day IV of the penultimate Test at Old Trafford, Smith followed his double-century with a brisk 82 that helped Australia stretch their lead after they lost four wickets early in their second innings.
Thereafter, Pat Cummins complemented Smith’s efforts, striking twice to leave England wobbling at 18 for two with 365 more to get for victory. No wonder it will be a difficult task for the hosts on the final day.
Cummins, however, praised Smith for helping Australia regain the momentum. “None of us really expected the innings Smithy went on to play… He was simply incredible and unbelievable out there,” the pacer told Sky Sports.
The legendary Glenn McGrath emphasised the importance of Smith’s knock on Saturday. “Australia may have been a little shaky at 44 for four, but again, Steve Smith comes out and rights the ship a little bit,” McGrath said.
“The two early wickets (that of Rory Burns and Joe Root) make a huge difference. England have to show some fight if they are not going to lose this game,” he added.
Hitting the stumps will be important on the final day, Cummins pointed out. “It feels like there’s enough in the wicket if you get it up there nice and full. We know that the bail height is going to be the hardest to play, so it’s about trying to hit the stumps as much as possible.”
