Delhi Capitals were professional in their approach and registered a comfortable five-wicket win over UP Warriorz in the final game of the inaugural Women’s Premier League’s group phase at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.
The win helped the Capitals finish the league phase as toppers and also earned them a spot in the final of the competition. The Warriorz and Mumbai Indians will play in Friday’s Eliminator at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The winners of that contest will take on the Capitals in Sunday’s final.
The Warriorz, earning their playoffs berth with a win over Gujarat Giants on Monday, had got off to a steady start after being put into bat. But the spin duo of Alice Capsey (3/26) and Radha Yadav (2/28) helped the Capitals gain control as they limited the Warriorz to 138/6.
The Capitals were off to a rousing start in reply with captain Meg Lanning (39) and Shafali Verma (21) hitting 56 inside five overs. After a minor collapse, which saw the Capitals lose three quick wickets, Marizanne Kapp (34 not out) and Capsey (34) stitched 60 for the fourth wicket that practically sealed the game for their side.
Kerr stars after MI’s brief stutter
Navi Mumbai: Mumbai Indians finished their group league campaign in the Women’s Premier League with a win as they claimed a four-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore on Tuesday.
New Zealander Amelia Kerr was the star performer for Mumbai with her all-round show.
Chasing a modest 126 to win here at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai Indians stuttered post a fiery start before eventually reaching the target in 16.3 overs.
RCB, however, signed off from the competition with their sixth loss in eight league matches.
All-rounder Kerr was at the top of her game with figures of 4-0-22-3 with the ball and an unbeaten 31 from 27 balls. She added 47 runs for the fifth wicket with Pooja Vastrakar (19) to revive Mumbai, who were rocked twice in quick succession.
After openers Hayley Matthews (24 off 17 balls) and Yastika Bhatia (30 off 26 balls) were out post a brisk start, RCB’s Sobhana Asha dismissed Nat Sciver-Brunt for 13. Mumbai then lost a few quick wickets. RCB’s Kanika Ahuja claimed two wickets in one over.
But Kerr finished the game calmly for Mumbai.
