Security was hit for a six at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Sunday as a serial pitch invader entered the playing arena before India’s World Cup opener against Australia.

Daniel Jarvis, aka Jarvo, who had been in the news for frequently breaching security and entering the ground during India’s tour of England in 2021, exposed loopholes in the stadium security as he smartly slipped into the field as the Indian cricketers and their Australian counterparts got ready for the national anthems before the start of play.

Donning the India blues, Jarvo, after finding his way in, even had a brief exchange of words with Virat Kohli, who wasn’t at all amused with the matter, before he was pulled up by a groundsman at the venue.

Later, he sneaked his way back into the field again before India’s keeper-batsman KL Rahul showed him the exit door.

It was learnt that Jarvo, already banned from English grounds, had been arrested — only to be released later — and will no longer be allowed in ICC tournaments as well. But how did he dodge the supposedly tight security arrangement?

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) was certainly left red-faced following the incident. “It appears he has come from the Madras Cricket Club (a centuries-old section of the stadium). Whether there was some lapse or the other in terms of security can be found out via the CCTV cameras installed there,” a TNCA official told The Telegraph.

The association will also be discussing the matter in its review meeting on Monday. “After each international game, we hold a review meeting where everything associated with the game is up for discussion. Be it any problem, issue or whatever. This, too, will be discussed tomorrow (Monday) at the meeting,” the TNCA official added.
