The cricketing fraternity may well be in awe of Glenn Maxwell’s unbelievable 201 not out that snatched a win for Australia against Afghanistan from the jaws of defeat back in Mumbai on Tuesday night, but Sourav Ganguly thinks that poor planning by the opposition helped the Australian all-rounder, who was limping with cramps, tilt the scales in the match.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Delhi Capitals’ camp at the Jadavpur University Salt Lake campus ground on Thursday, the Capitals’ director of cricket, who is also a former India captain, said: “With all due respect to Maxwell, Afghanistan should have won that game. He has played an absolute blinder, but very poor bowling from the Afghans.
“A fantastic innings by Maxwell, but not the greatest of bowling and captaincy (Hashmatullah Shahidi). But yeah, you’ve got to give it to him for such an innings.”
Sourav also refused to call it the greatest ODI innings.
“I won’t say it’s the greatest in ODIs. Maxwell’s knock is tremendous because of the situation he was in. But I have seen some fabulous innings from Sachin (Tendulkar), from Virat (Kohli) too.”
