Marizanne Kapp blew Gujarat Giants’ top order away to take a five-for that also laid the foundation for Delhi Capitals’ 10-wicket win in Saturday’s Women’s Premier League game at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
For the Capitals, this was their third win in the competition as they are now second in the standings with six points. The Meg Lanning-led side certainly needed such a morale-boosting victory, especially after an eight-wicket thrashing from table-toppers Mumbai Indians in its previous game.
South Africa pacer Kapp (5/15) and India all-rounder Shikha Pandey (3/26) helped the Capitals limit the Giants to a paltry total of 105/9. In reply, Shafali Verma (76 not out off 28 balls) and skipper Lanning (21 not out) took just 7.1 overs to help the Capitals chase down the small target and win the game with 77 balls to spare.
Shafali’s blitzkrieg featured 10 boundaries and five maximums.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Giants lost Sabbhineni Meghana in just the second ball of the game. In her second over, Kapp cleaned up Laura Wolvaardt and then trapped Ashleigh Gardner lbw off consecutive deliveries before dismissing the inform Harleen Deol and Sushma Verma, leaving the Giants reeling at 33/6 in 6.5 overs.
Healy faces MI might
Calcutta: Alyssa Healy’s UP Warriorz would be upbeat after their thumping 10-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore, but in Mumbai Indians, they face a completely different and tougher challenge on Sunday.
Mumbai are yet to lose a match in the Women’s Premier League.
