Gujarat Giants registered a shock 11-run win over second-placed Delhi Capitals at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday in what should go down as the biggest upset so far in the inaugural Women’s Premier League.
Full points from this game lifted the Giants from the bottom place in the standings, which now again belongs to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). A Capitals victory would have helped RCB to keep their knockout hopes afloat.
Opener Laura Wolvaardt (57) and Ashleigh Gardner (51not out) hit half-centuries, but that didn’t prove to be enough for the Giants as they managed a modest 147/4 after being put into bat. The Capitals, in reply, were progressing steadily at 48/1 in the sixth over.
But following captain MegLanning’s departure, they slipped to 52/4 in the seventh over. The Giants then were right back into the game. Marizanne Kapp (36), after a tidy effort with the ball, kept the equation within the Capitals’reach, but her dismissal left the side reeling at 100/8.
Arundhati Reddy (25) and Shikha Pandey fought back in their ninth-wicket stand that yielded the Capitals a solid 35. But Kim Garth removed Reddy in the 18th over before Gardner sparked celebrations in the Giants camp when she dismissed No.11 Poonam Yadav with eight balls to spare.
