Hammered by Mumbai Indians in the inaugural game of the Women’s Premier League on Saturday, Gujarat Giants suffered their second straight loss in the competition.
In less than 24 hours after such a disappointing result at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the Giants turned up at the same venue and on this occasion, UP Warriorz beat them by three wickets with a ball to spare.
Thanks to Harleen Deol (46 off 32 balls) and Australian pacer Kim Garth (5/36), the Gujarat franchise seemed to be on course in defending their competitive total of 169/6. But Grace Harris (59 not out off 26 balls) played a blinder of a knock and stitched an unbroken 70 off just 26 balls in the eight-wicket partnership with Sophie Ecclestone (22 not out) that took the Warriorz home.
The Giants had 19 to defend in the final over. But Annabel Sutherland, the bowler, cracked under pressure and dished out stuff that was ideal for the well-set Grace to latch onto.
She bowled a couple of wides as well in that final over to make matters easier for the Warriorz and Grace, who finished it off with a six.
