Mumbai Indians bowlers performed collectively to help their team thrash Delhi Capitals by eight wickets in Thursday’s Women’s Premier League game at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
The Calcutta-born Saika Ishaque was on the money once again, taking 3/13, while Issy Wong (3/10) and Hayley Matthews (3/19) took three wickets apiece as the Capitals were bundled out for 105 in 18 overs after they won the toss and opted to bat first.
In reply, openers Yastika Bhatia and Matthews scored 41 and 32, respectively, as Mumbai overhauled Delhi’s paltry total with five overs to spare. Mumbai, with six points, are now atop the standings, having won all their three games so far.
The star bowler for Mumbai was Ishaque, who has taken her tally of wickets to nine in three games. The left-arm spinner first cleaned up Shafali Verma with the last ball of the second over.
Then, as Delhi captain Meg Lanning (43) and Jemimah Rodrigues (25) were trying to regain some momentum for their side with their fourth-wicket stand, Ishaque dismissed both the batters.
Knocking over Rodrigues, Player of the Match Ishaque then took the key wicket of Lanning in the same over. At 84/5 after 13 overs, Delhi lost their next five wickets for the addition of only 21 runs.
Onus on captains
Calcutta: After a hat-trick of losses, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, captained by Smriti Mandhana, will be eyeing their maiden win of the Women’s Premier League when they take on UP Warriorz at the Brabourne Stadium on Friday.
Alyssa Healy’s Warriorz have fared slightly better so far with one win in their kitty from three games. Both the teams would need their captains to be back among runs.
