The West Indies left England reeling on the opening day of the third and final Test at the National Cricket Stadium in St George’s, Grenada.

At tea on Thursday, England were eight down for 114 as the Windies pacers made fine use of the conditions on offer after winning the toss and opting to bowl.

Kyle Mayers, coming in for spinner Veerasammy Permaul, was the hero for the Windies in the first session as he dismissed opener Zak Crawley and captain Joe Root without having conceded a run in the five overs he had bowled.

The situation turned worse for the visitors in the post-lunch session as double strikes each from Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph had reduced England to 90 for eight. A resistance from Chris Woakes and Jack Leech somehow helped England past the 100 mark.

Brief scores: England 114/8 (C. Woakes 25 batting; K. Mayers 2/0, A. Joseph 2/22) vs West Indies. At tea, Day I.
