Captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged that his team ticked all the boxes in their six-wicket win over the West Indies in the first of the three ODIs in Ahmedabad on Sunday. But the focus will be on the need to “keep getting better as a team”, he stressed.
“I don’t really believe in a perfect game. We want to keep getting better as a team.
“We spoke of what we wanted to achieve and we ticked all the boxes,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation.
Challenge yourself and be innovative — that’s Rohit’s suggestion to his teammates. “I’m open to a lot of things if we need to change. But the ultimate goal is to be able to achieve what the team wants, whether we want to bat or bowl differently.
“Honestly, I don’t think we need to change a whole lot. All I will ask of the players it to challenge themselves and be innovative,” he said.
A huge credit, however, goes to spinners Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal as they shared seven wickets among themselves to bowl the Windies out for 176.
For Chahal, adjudged Player of the Match for his spell of 4/49, bowling a bit quicker worked to his advantage.
“Washy (Washington) created the pressure with his two wickets early on. When I saw his spell, I knew that the ball was turning on that pitch, which meant I could flight the ball a bit.
“On these kinds of pitches, even if you flight the ball, it’s not that easy to hit down the ground. I spoke to Rohitbhai, Viratbhaiyya (Kohli), and realised that pace was important on that wicket. My usual slower pace wouldn’t work, as the quicker balls were the ones spinning.
“I changed my line also and focused on the middle-and-off stuff,” Chahal said.
