Yashasvi Jaiswal lived up to expectations and shone on his international debut.

The young left-hander (116 batting), in his first Test appearance, registered his maiden international hundred, taking India to a commanding 245/2 at tea on Day 2 of the opening Test at Windsor Park in Dominica.

Jaiswal and skipper Rohit Sharma (103) put India in the driving seat — this was the first time in Test cricket that India secured a first-innings lead without losing any wicket — after Ravichandran Ashwin’s fifer on Wednesday had bundled the West Indies out for a paltry 150 on Day I.

Already ahead by 95 runs, India have set themselves up well for a big lead which further brightens their prospects of an innings victory, particularly against a side that struggles to last even a day with the bat.

Thursday’s second session looked more like a batting practice for Jaiswal and Rohit as they both strolled to their respective centuries. Having reached his fifty with a boundary in the first session, Jaiswal worked debutant Alick Athanaze towards fine leg to get to three figures late in the post-lunch session.

Rohit, too, brought up his hundred, his 10th in Test cricket, by placing Athanaze through the covers for a boundary. Off the very next ball though, Athanaze finally got his team a wicket as an inside edge off Rohit’s gloves ricocheted off his pads and popped up to be taken by keeper Joshua Da Silva.

A few minutes before tea, India lost their new No.3 Shubman Gill, who fell to a pitched-up delivery from Jomel Warrican that spun away.

As for Jaiswal, he became the first-ever Indian opener to score a Test century on debut away from home. When the opportunity came, he ensured to make the best use of it and that too, on a surface having something in it for the spinners.
