Pat Cummins has expressed that he is open to continuing as Australia’s ODI captain even after the ongoing World Cup.
Cummins, who was initially handed the reins of the Test team, was made ODI captain following the sudden retirement of Aaron Finch last year. Guiding Australia to the World Cup semi-finals riding on seven straight wins after losing the first two games, Cummins has made a strong case for captaincy extension.
“We’ll chat about it,” Cummins told the Australian media about his future as ODI captain. “We’ve been pretty open, me, Andrew McDonald (head coach) and George Bailey (selector). Around different times in the year, you’re going to have different priorities.
“This is a bit of a one-off year where there are three or four big off-season events. After here, the focus shifts back to Test cricket for a fair while.
“I feel like I’ve been managed really well and looked after in a really, really busy year where you don’t really want to give up any cricket,” the pacer said.
Cummins, who had opted out of this year’s IPL to focus on his international commitments, will be putting his name in the auction ahead of the 2024 edition.
“I’m really excited. I’m probably going to go into the IPL auction for next year to try and get some games before that (T20) World Cup next year,” Cummins said.
