When two doyens of Indian cricket, one a legendary opener and the other an artist with the willow, get together to discuss the game’s various aspects, it promises to be captivating and engrossing.

Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath, two former captains, will be in conversation with Ambarish Dasgupta, Senior Partner, Intueri Consulting, during the opening day of Infocom 2022, an ABP initiative, on Thursday.

This will take place during the spotlight session, part of Infocom’s strategy and leadership forum. The three-day event will take place at ITC Sonar in Calcutta. While ‘Sunny’ Gavaskar played 125 Tests and 108 ODIs, Vishy is a veteran of 91 Tests and 25 ODIs.

A respected commentator and columnist, Gavaskar was the first cricketer to reach 10,000 Test runs and also held the record for the highest number of Test hundreds (34) before being overtaken by Sachin Tendulkar. Viswanath was as crucial as Gavaskar to the Indian top order in the 1970s.

He always played the game in its true spirit and his recalling of Bob Taylor, who had been given out by the umpire, in the Golden Jubilee match against England at the Wankhede in 1980 is part of folklore.

The two have rarely come together at a public forum and Thursday will provide a unique opportunity to get their insight and understanding of various subjects through some “untold stories”. Gavaskar with his subtle humour and vivid insights is known to keep the audience engaged in his own inimitable style.

Viswanath can charm listeners with his grace, depth of knowledge and experience. “In some ways, this discussion could be a marriage between management and cricketing issues. We will look to borrow some attributes from cricket into corporate management,” said Dasgupta.

“The various dilemmas and ethical issues faced during building a team could be of help for us too.” Calcutta looks forward to the two cricketing giants starting a partnership of a different kind on Thursday.
