Captain Dean Elgar led from the front as South Africa enjoyed the upper hand on Day I of the second Test against Bangladesh in Gqeberha. At stumps on Friday, the home team were 278/5.

After electing to bat, Elgar and fellow opener Sarel Erwee shared a 52-run first-wicket partnership to give their team a decent start. It got better as No.3 batsman Keegan Petersen joined his captain at the crease. The duo shared a 81-run stand, which ended when Elgar was caught behind off Taijul Islam.

Elgar played a brisk 70-run knock. His 89-ball stay saw him slam 10 boundaries. The Proteas middle-order batted well though a few of them should have got bigger scores after getting good starts. While Petersen and Temba Bavuma got fifties, No.5 batsman Ryan Rickelton was out for 42.

Petersen made 64 off 129, while Bavuma was patient enough for his 67 off 162 balls. For Bangladesh, left-arm spinner Taijul was the top bowler, picking up three wickets on the day.

Brief scores: South Africa 278/5 (Dean Elgar 70) vs Bangladesh (At stumps, Day I)
