Head coach Rahul Dravid acknowledged Team India have been trying to address the area of their batting depth.

Right through the T20I series against the West Indies, which India lost 2-3 at Lauderhill in Florida on Sunday, India went in with a long tail that began from the No.8 slot in their batting order.

“I think in terms of our squad here (in the Caribbean), it probably didn’t allow us the flexibility in some ways to be able to change the combinations a little bit. But I think going forward, we’ve got to look at certain areas in which we can get better.

“Finding depth in our batting has been an area we are trying to address,” Dravid said at the news conference following India’s eight-wicket defeat in the final T20I on Sunday.

“We are trying to do the best we possibly can. But that’s certainly an area we can look at without weakening our bowling attack but ensuring we have a certain amount of depth in batting.”

India obviously missed several of their first-team regulars in the recent T20Is. That said, this series loss seems to be serving a lesson to them.

“As these games are going on, scores are becoming bigger and bigger. If you look at the West Indies, they had Alzarri Joseph coming in at No. 11 and he too can hit the ball. So you have sides which have that depth.

“Obviously, we have some challenges on that front and we need to work on that. It’s certainly something that this series has shown us and we need to build on that depth,” Dravid pointed out.

Dravid also hinted that a few of the regulars could be back in the squad for the Asia Cup, having recovered from their injuries. Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback series will be against Ireland in the three-match T20I series beginning on Friday.

“We have a few guys coming back from injuries. We have to give them opportunities to play (in the Asia Cup). We have a one week camp in Bangalore from August 23 for the Asia Cup. We’ll take it as it comes,” he said.
