Team India would be eager to get their combination right during the three-match ODI series against the West Indies with the World Cup just over two months away. The process begins at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown on Thursday.
After winning the first Test comfortably and dominating most of the second — drawn due to rain — Rohit Sharma and his men should be well-placed in terms of mindset. Hence, switching to the 50-over format in such a short time shouldn’t be much of a problem for the team.
The aspect which could make them sweat is their team composition for the upcoming games. With Rohit and Shubman Gill set to open and Virat Kohli at No.3, India have to find their No.4 and also finalise their middle order.
With Ishan Kishan impressing in the final Test in Port of Spain, he could be preferred for the keeper-batter’s position over Sanju Samson, although the latter’s strokeplay is as good as that of the Jharkhand youngster. But consistency does matter and that could be the deciding factor.
Will Suryakumar Yadav be included in the XI, especially after first-ball dismissals in his last three ODI appearances?
Obviously, the Windies bowling is not as strong as that of Australia, against whom Surya had suffered such ignominy. Besides, Surya is too good a talent to be made to warm the benches.
All-rounders Hardik Pandya, who will be leading the T20I team in the Caribbean, and Ravindra Jadeja could be the automatic choices in the side alongside Rohit, Gill and Kohli, while the fast-progressing Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Umran Malik may be given the fast bowling task. Mukesh Kumar, who had a pretty decent Test debut in Port of Spain, cannot be ruled out altogether for a maiden ODI cap too.
As for the spinners, the team management has options in the form of Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, who has an impressive record in the Caribbean.
Given the current West Indies quality, winning the series doesn’t look to be too tough for India. Besides, the Windies will be without two of their experienced players, the explosive Nicholas Pooran and seamer all-rounder Jason Holder. Their inability to qualify for the 50-over World Cup for the first time ever may also affect their focus on ODI cricket.
For India though, these would bother little as all that matters to them is notching up as many wins as possible leading up to the World Cup at home, something that would also boost their preparation. Seniors, particularly, Rohit and Kohli, would certainly like to make significant contributions in order to be in the right frame of mind as the World Cup approaches.
