Shreyas Iyer’s unbelievable form continued as he scored his third successive half-century that guided India to a series sweep against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala on Sunday.

After remaining unbeaten on 57 and 74 in the first two T20Is, Shreyas followed up with a 73 not out in the final game at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association ground as India overhauled Sri Lanka’s modest total of 146/5 with six wickets in hand and 19 balls to spare.

This was India’s third series sweep in a row, after beating the West Indies 3-0 in both the ODI and T20I legs of the preceding tour. They have also extended their winning streak in T20Is to 12.

India had again lost captain Rohit Sharma early in pursuit of 147. Sanju Samson, promoted to open the innings in place of Ishan Kishan, who was ruled out of the game after being hit on the head while batting during Saturday’s contest, also didn’t last long. But a determined and focused Shreyas was up to the task.

Once again, he was excellent in terms of taking calculated risks and finding the gaps with ease. Not being flashy at all, he held one end up and with contributions from Deepak Hooda (21) and Ravindra Jadeja (22 not out), India won comfortably.

“It has been a roller-coaster journey for me since the (shoulder) injury (last year). To come out of injury and perform at this level is really heartening,” said Shreyas, who finished the series unbeaten with 204 runs.

India went into the game without pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. But the new-look attack, featuring quicks Mohammed Siraj and Avesh Khan with leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi and left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav, did an impressive job.

Sri Lanka would have got a much lesser total had not for captain Dasun Shanaka stepped with a 74 not out off just 38 balls.
