T20 World Cup: Wrist spin key to success

The key to success in Australia is the ability to probably get more top spin than sidespin, which happens more and more on the subcontinent, says Daniel Vettori

Spinners’ task tends to get tougher in Australian conditions. But wrist spin and proper execution of top spin may enhance their chances of success in the T20 World Cup beginning next month, believe Muttiah Muralitharan and Daniel Vettori.

Spin maestro Muralitharan, who’s the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, and former New Zealand left-arm spinner and captain Vettori are in the city to take part in the Legends League Cricket that begins at Eden Gardens on Friday.

A special benefit match between India Maharajas and Team World Giants will start the season on the opening day. “It’s difficult for spinners in Australia because it doesn’t spin much there as they’re more in favour of the fast bowlers. But a bowler like (Yuzvendra) Chahal and even (Ravi) Bishnoi could be successful there since they are wrist-spinners. Wrist spin, I think, could be more effective than finger spin in those conditions,” Muralitharan said on Thursday.

Vettori cited the example of Australia’s Test specialist and veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon. “The best example is Nathan Lyon. His ability to get bounce through top-spin is where he sets himself apart.

“In countries like New Zealand, Australia and England to a lesser degree, it’s about the drift and the amount of top spin you get on the ball. But someone like Lyon has been successful because of his seam release. It’s almost a top spin release which helps him get that bounce.

“The key to success in Australia is the ability to probably get more top spin than sidespin, which happens more and more on the subcontinent,” Vettori explained.

Ashwin’s presence

Vettori also believes the presence of Ravichandran Ashwin lends more balance to India’s T20 World Cup squad, especially because of his ability with the bat. “We all know Ashwin has been exceptional in Tests. What works for him is, that he’s coming off a good IPL (for Rajasthan Royals) for which, he has been included in India’s T20 Cup squad.

“India do have a plethora of spin bowlers, a lot to choose from. The fact that most of their spinners are all-rounders as well is what, I feel, sets Ashwin apart and gives the team a good balance,” Vettori said.
