During game time, one comes across Suryakumar Yadav effortlessly unleashing strokes to all corners of the ground on a consistent basis. Particularly in T20 cricket, failures have been rare for this supreme stroke-maker as he makes sure to thrive under pressure on most occasions.

To churn out impact-making knocks with such consistency is never easy. But what has brought success to Suryakumar is his effective planning during nets back home.

“I feel what I have done during my practice sessions back home when I return to Mumbai has had an important role to play. I try and put a lot of pressure on myself whenever I’m going for a few practice sessions or putting myself in a match scenario.

“What I do is, I try and put a lot of pressure on myself during nets,” India’s No.4 batsman said at a news conference in Sydney on Thursday.

“So for example, if I am targeting a few balls and I have to get N number of runs, I just come out if I get out. That day I don’t go in to bat again,” Suryakumar, named Man of the Match, stated.

Clear about his plans, Suryakumar’s focus is on expressing himself without trying to do anything “out of the box”. “My plans have been very clear. Whatever shots I have in my kitty, I just go out and express them.

“I won’t do anything out of the box. It has been helping me and hopefully, I’ll try and do the same thing in the coming games,” he said.

Thursday’s game against The Netherlands was another instance this season when Suryakumar and Virat Kohli paired up to take India to a strong position. “I feel we respect each other’s game when we are batting together,” Suryakumar said about his camaraderie with Kohli.

“If I’m getting a few boundaries from one end, he tries to rotate the strike and is intent on looking for good shots.”
