Ashish Nehra has been around for too long to ably predict Virat Kohli's successor as Team India's T20 captain.
The former India bowler, who was the core of India's bowling unit for over a decade, feels Jasprit Bumrah can be the right choice to take up the heavyweight responsibility.
In an interaction with Cricbuzz, Nehra questioned the concept of people looking down on a pacer's ability to captain the side, and said, "Apart from Rohit Sharma, we are hearing the names of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul. Pant has travelled around the world, carried drinks, and was even dropped from the team a few times. Rahul was recalled to the Test side after Mayank Agarwal got injured. As Ajay Jadeja said, Bumrah understands the game quite well. He is also in the playing XI in all formats. It's nowhere written in the rule book that pacers can't be captains."
According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will announce the new captain of the Indian T20 unit by next week.
As far is Bumrah's on-field exploits are concerned, he on Friday became India's leading wicket taker in the shortest format when he dismissed two batters during the T20 World Cup match against Scotland to take his tally to 64.
The Gujarat pacer achieved the feat when he castled Mark Watt in the 18th over of the game.
Bumrah, who had match figures 2/10, now has 64 T20 wickets from 54 matches. He surpassed spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who has 63 wickets from 49 matches.
Ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is third with 55 wickets from 48 matches and is followed by pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar (50 wickets from 52) and Ravindra Jadeja (43 wickets from 54 matches).
