Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 102 off 51 balls and his 143-run partnership with Tilak Varma helped Mumbai Indians return to winning ways with a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede in Mumbai on Monday.

This was the Hardik Pandya-led team’s fourth win in 12 matches in IPL 2024.

Surya’s innings included 12 boundaries and six sixes while Varma contributed 37 off 32 balls during an entertaining unbroken fourth wicket stand. Surya completed his century with a six over covers off T. Natarajan.

Mumbai Indians’ chase of 174 began in a disastrous fashion with Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir dismissed for 31. But Surya broke the shackles with a superb innings. He had been limping towards the end of his innings but managed to carry on.

Earlier, Hardik and Piyush Chawla bagged three wickets each as Mumbai Indians restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad to 173/8.

Hardik found rhythm as he claimed 3/31 while Chawla (3/33) produced an impactful performance to trouble the Sunrisers batters.

Sunrisers skipper Pat Cummins chipped in with a 17-ball 35 late in the innings to take them past the 150-run mark.

In complete contrast to last time these teams met in this IPL when Sunrisers
hammered 277/3, their free-flowing batters struggled for momentum.

The Powerplay overs yielded 56 runs without any damage but the regular fall of wickets stemmed the flow of runs.

Coming on to bowl only in the second half of the innings, Chawla made the biggest impact with key wickets of Travis Head (48) and Heinrich Klaasen (2) to put Mumbai Indians in complete control.

With two inside edges for boundaries at the start, Head appeared to be struggling for timing and rhythm. Having survived off a no ball, Head got another life when Nuwan Thushara spilled a regulation chance at deep third man when the opener was on 44 in the eighth over.

Bumrah had got Abhishek Sharma (11 off 16 balls) caught behind and Mayank Agarwal had become the debutant Ankush Kamboj’s first victim.
