Still wary of India’s firepower, says New Zealand cricket team captain Tom Latham

When Will Young hit the winning runs off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja at the Chinnaswamy on Sunday, New Zealand registered a first in 36 years. Their first Test win on Indian soil after close to four decades.

The occasion was certainly a special one for captain Tom Latham and his teammates also because they went into this game after a hammering from Sri Lanka in the two-Test series.

"I think 36 years ago is the last time we've won here. So, it's a really special feeling to be in this position. It's a proud moment for this group.

"We certainly know that it's going to be a challenge against India in the remainder of the series as they obviously have a lot of firepower in that line-up," Latham said at the news conference after the eight-wicket win.

Latham credited his pace trio of William O'Rourke, Matt Henry and Tim Southee for striking in key moments of the series opener. "I think the work we did with the new ball yesterday (Saturday) evening was outstanding. Southee, Henry and William asked lots of questions and obviously managed to get the rewards.

"We certainly knew India were going to get themselves right back in the game and just happy that we weren't chasing too many more than 100," the skipper said.

Latham also had a special mention of the century-plus partnership between Rachin Ravindra and Southee, which built on New Zealand's lead after they had suddenly slipped to 223/6 from 180/3 on Day III. "The game was in the balance a little bit when Tim and Rachin formed their partnership.

"It was massive for us. If you said to us the day before during the press conference that we'd be chasing 100 on Day V, I would have shaken your hand and said, 'We'll take that," Latham said.

New Zealand, however, have already shifted their focus to the second Test in Pune beginning on Thursday. "That will be our focus in terms of the approach we want to go in with. We've built a little bit of confidence up this week," Latham stated.

Kane condition

The Black Caps are still monitoring the condition of Kane Williamson, who missed the Bengaluru Test due to a groin injury. "I'm not 100 per cent sure about his return yet, but fingers crossed he can get over here as soon as possible," Latham said.
