Shubman Gill’s sister Shahneel Gill was abused on social media after the Gujarat Titans opener scored an unbeaten century against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy in Bangalore on Sunday to knock the home team out of the playoffs.
Gill played a brilliant innings of 104 not out off 52 balls, including five fours and eight sixes. The Titans’ victory meant that Mumbai Indians made the playoffs as the fourth team and RCB finished sixth.
Following his incredible knock, Shubman posted a picture of his innings on Instagram with the caption, “It begins now.” Shubman’s sister Shahneel, who herself is popular on Instagram with about 1.10 lakh followers, also commented on the post and wrote “My babyyy.”
However, she was the target of several abusive remarks which also criticised Shubman for ending RCB’s campaign.
Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Monday slammed those who abused Shahneel on social media. She said action will be taken against those trolling Shubman’s sister.
“Extremely shameful to see trollers abusing #ShubhmanGill’s sister just because the team they follow lost a match. Previously we had initiated action against people abusing #ViratKohli’s daughter. DCW will take action against all those who have abused Gill’s sister as well. This shall not be tolerated!” Maliwal said in a tweet.
Mumbai Indians hammered former champions Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final league fixture to finish ahead of RCB on the IPL 2023 points table. The five-time winners finished fourth on the table with 16 points from 14 matches. RCB finished on 14 points in 14 games. Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians qualified for the business end of the IPL.
Gill’s knock also secured the Titans top spot in the standings. Hardik Pandya’s team finished with 20 points from 14 games. Gill became the second-highest run-getter after Faf du Plessis.
The in-form India opener can also surpass Du Plessis to claim the Orange Cap in the remaining matches. The Indian opener has 680 with two centuries so far while the RCB captain has scored 730 runs this season.
“I am in good form, it’s about getting a start and then converting it into a big one,” Gill said after the match.
“In the first half of the IPL, I was missing out on those big ones. I was getting a lot of 40s and 50s. Thankfully, it’s all working out for me...”
