Daryl Mitchell’s crucial 82 helped New Zealand go past the 200-run mark at the Wankhede on Friday.
Not just the heat, Mitchell also had to counter Sarfaraz Khan. Fielding at silly point, Sarfaraz got under the skin of the New Zealand batter which led to the umpires summoning Rohit Sharma and the fielder for a pitch-side meeting.
Sarfaraz was continuously chirping which seemed to have annoyed Mitchell who reported it to the on-field officials. Umpires Richard Illingworth and Michael Gough were then seen having a word with Rohit and Sarfaraz in the post-lunch session.
Mitchell said the hot and sultry conditions did bother him and the half-hour before the tea break on the first day was the toughest.
“I think it was probably more the first hour after lunch with me and Will Young
that was seriously warm and that’s probably what took it out of us. You could see a number of the Indian players as well were commenting how much they were battling with it as well...
“So yeah that last half-an-hour before tea was just about trying to be switched on for when the bowler was
bowling and trying to conserve as much energy as I could in between balls and
try and concentrate on breathing and trying to get my core body temperature down because that was probably what was causing my struggle,” said Mitchell.
“Obviously, that tea break was good timing, I jumped in the ice bath and sat in there for about 10 minutes... so I definitely came out feeling a lot better after that,” he said.
