The final berth achieved, India can think of experimenting a bit in their Asia Cup Super 4s clash against Bangladesh at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday.
On paper, Friday's game is completely inconsequential as Bangladesh no longer have any hopes of making the final after losing to Pakistan and Sri Lanka in their previous two matches.
India, however, would like to test a few players who have been warming the benches so far in the competition. Also, some rest for a few of the regulars would help them come back fresh for Sunday's final before the three home ODIs against Australia beginning on September 22.
On Thursday, Ravindra Jadeja, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma and Shardul Thakur were the only five players to attend India's optional training session. Young Tilak, who was selected purely on his impressive showing in the recent West Indies T20Is, bowled for quite some time at nets alongside batting.
“I have been working with Tilak since his U-19 days," India's bowling coach Paras Mhambrey said. "We were in South Africa and we realised he has bowling skills. We are working on it consistently.
"If the captain gets the confidence that he can bowl an over and deliver, that one over can turn into two overs. But it depends on circumstances where we need that extra bowler," Mhambrey added.
There appears to be a possibility of Tilak earning his maiden ODI cap on Friday. If he makes the XI, seamer all-rounder Hardik Pandya could be rested.
Another possibility is that of Suryakumar's inclusion in the XI. In spite of Surya not having a great record in the 50-over format, the team management still has enough trust in him to come good because of the massive impact he has had in T20s.
Also, captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid take Surya very seriously. So, they would obviously want someone of his calibre to be in rhythm and flow going into the ODI World Cup which begins on October 5.
But, if Surya does make his way in, who does he replace? Will it be Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul or anyone else?
In the bowling department too, there's scope for trying out a different combination. If required, India can think of resting Jasprit Bumrah keeping his workload in mind and draft in Mohammed Shami in his place.
If conditions permit, India can also go in with a spinner less and bring Shardul Thakur back in the XI. What bodes well for India is that the bowling group is playing an equally important role in their road to the final.
