The draw in Brisbane means India (on 55.89 percentage points) need to win both their remaining Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Melbourne and Sydney to secure the World Test Championship (WTC) final berth, regardless of the other results.
Winning the Boxing Day Test at the MCG followed by the New Year’s Test at SCG from January 3 next year will take India to 60.53 percentage points, while Australia will end up with only 57.02 percentage points even if they beat Sri Lanka 2-0 away.
If India win one Test and draw the other, they’ll finish at 57.02 and can be overtaken by Australia, who will then end at 58.77 provided they win both their Tests against Sri Lanka. However, if India win the series 2-1 and Australia beat Sri Lanka 1-0 or South Africa lose 1-0 to Pakistan, India will still make the WTC final.
If the series finishes 1-1, India’s percentage points go down to 53.51, which then requires South Africa to lose both Tests, or Australia lose 1-0 to Sri Lanka or that series ends 0-0. In that case, Australia and India will be level at 53.51, but India finish ahead based on more series wins in this cycle (three to two).
