Parth Bhut’s all-round show helped Saurashtra record a come-from-behind 71-run win over Punjab in their Ranji Trophy quarter final in Rajkot on Saturday.

Bhut hit an unbeaten 111 in the first innings and followed it up with a 51 at a critical phase of the game. With his left-arm spin, the 25-year-old scalped five wickets in the second innings after striking thrice in the first.

Saurashtra will face Karnataka in the semi-final in Bangalore.

Resuming on 52/2, Punjab could still fancy their chances as they had only 200 more to get on the final day. But Saurashtra’s spin trio — Bhut, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja and Yuvrajsinh Dodiya — had a stranglehold on Punjab as they eventually folded for 180.

Brief scores: Saurashtra 303 & 379. Punjab 431 & 180 (P. Bhut 5/89). Saurashtra won by 71 runs.

Bengal squad

Off-spinner all-rounder Karan Lal has been drafted into the Bengal squad, as expected after the quarter-final win over Jharkhand, for the semi-final against Madhya Pradesh next week.

The youngster, in all likelihood, will also be a part of Bengal’s XI as they expect a turning track in Indore. He could be a straight replacement for struggling opener Kazi Junaid Saifi.

Fifties for WI openers

Bulawayo: West Indies openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul hit half-centuries before rain forced players off the ground on Day I of their first Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club.

Skipper Brathwaite and Tagenarine were both batting on 55 as the Windies were 112 without loss after winning the toss and opting to bat first.

Rain intervention stopped play after 55 overs were bowled. And with the weather not getting any better, early stumps were taken on Saturday.

The openers were quite watchful as Zimbabwe bowlers kept it tight all through. Brathwaite has so far faced 138 balls to get to 55, while Tagenarine dealt with 170.
