Sarfaraz Khan hit a stroke-filled 275 to propel Mumbai to a mammoth 544/7 declared on the second day of their Elite Group D Ranji Trophy game against defending champions Saurashtra in Ahmedabad on Friday.

Continuing from his overnight score of 121, Sarfaraz, a 24-year-old left-handed batsman, hammered 30 boundaries and seven sixes in his 401-ball innings. Ajinkya Rahane, the other overnight not out batsman, however fell for 129. The two shared a 252-run stand for the fourth wicket. Sarfaraz has a liking for the Ranji Trophy. The last time the premier red-ball domestic tournament was held, in 2019-20, he had compiled 928 runs from six matches for Mumbai. His average was a staggering 154.66 and he hit three hundreds and two fifties, with his highest being 301 not out.

Saurashtra, in reply, were 18/0 at stumps.

Sakibul’s feat

While Sarfaraz missed the triple ton, Bihar’s Sakibul Gani didn’t. The 22-year-old right-handed batsman made 341 in the Plate Group match against Mizoram in Calcutta on Friday. Gani thus became the first cricketer to score a triple hundred on first-class debut. The previous highest was 267 by Madhya Pradesh’s Ajay Rothera in 2018.

Bihar declared their first innings at 686/5 with Babul Kumar remaining not out on 229. Mizoram were 40/3 in reply.

Lalit impresses

Delhi’s Lalit Yadav scored 177 in Delhi’s total of 452 against Tamil Nadu in a Elite Group H match in Guwahati. He hit 17 fours and 10 sixes.

Tamil Nadu were 75/2 at the close of play on Friday.
