A come-from-behind victory in the campaign opener does boost the mindset and morale of a team.
The same should work in Bengal’s case too as they go into their second game of this season’s Ranji Trophy against Himachal Pradesh at Eden Gardens on Tuesday.
Under pressure for a good part of their Ranji opener versus Uttar Pradesh, Bengal did commendably well to wrestle back the momentum and seal the contest with a six-wicket win.
Importantly, Bengal’s batters ensured not to muff things up on a wicket that had become easier for batting, with opener Koushik Ghosh, senior pro Anustup Majumdar and stand-in captain Manoj Tiwary hitting half-centuries to help their side chase down a tricky 257- run target.
In the absence of regular skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran, who’s in Bangladesh as a back-up opener for Team India, Bengal would certainly hope for Anustup and Tiwary in particular to play with added responsibility.
Their wealth of experience aside, Anustup and Tiwary showed excellent composure on the final day of the previous game when the situation could well have gone awry for Bengal, especially after Ghosh’s early dismissal.
The longer the duo stay out there in the middle, it means added pressure on the opposition bowling attack.
It was against Himachal Pradesh that Bengal had lost in the quarter-final stage of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy at the 22 Yards School of Cricket ground last month.
But that game, which Bengal lost due to bungles in the deciding over, should have no bearing on this contest.
This a different format altogether, while conditions at the Eden will again be assisting fast bowling, which is Bengal’s main strength.
However, Bengal’s pace attack will undergo one change as either Ravi Kant Singh or Durgesh Dubey will be joining Ishan Porel, Man of the Match against Uttar Pradesh with a match-haul of seven wickets, Akash Deep and seamer all-rounder Sayan Sekhar Mondal.
Pritam Chakraborty, who did reasonably well in the last game, has been ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Chakraborty has been advised rest and rehab for 12 days by the team physio. “Ravi Kant is more likely to get the nod ahead of Pritam,” a team source said.
