An upbeat Bengal are planning to have one or two changes in the line-up for their next Ranji Trophy clash, against Hyderabad from Thursday at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

Teams usually don’t tend to change their winning combination, but the current form of No.3 batsman Sudip Chatterjee is a concern for Bengal after their brilliant turnaround in the opener versus Baroda, where they chased down a daunting target of 349 in spite of being bundled out for 88 in the first innings.

The left-handed Sudip managed only 11 and 18 in the previous game. He was a little unwell during the second innings and had to be pushed down at No.5 but not for a moment did he look to be very assured during his stay at the crease in both innings.

If the team management do go on to bench Sudip, Ritwik Roy Chowdhury could be the one to come in as his replacement.

Another possible change in the XI could be seamer all-rounder Sayan Sekhar Mondal or young left-arm pacer Ravi Kumar taking spinner all-rounder Writtick Chatterjee’s place.

Conditions at the Barabati Stadium seem to be much more in favour of the quicks.

Such were the conditions in the Baroda game that spinners hardly had a role to play. Writtick was given to bowl only three overs across both innings. He wasn’t effective with the bat as well, getting dismissed off the very first ball in the second essay after scoring only nine in the first.

Mondal’s inclusion could well provide some decent support to Bengal’s pace trio of Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep and Ishan Porel. Besides, if they wish to draft Ravi, the hero of India’s successful campaign in the U-19 World Cup final, into the XI, that surely will be another bold move.
