Bowlers have come to India’s rescue, again. This time, in ODI cricket.
Barring Suryakumar Yadav (64), a very fortunate KL Rahul (49) and Deepak Hooda (29), who chipped in with a useful contribution towards the end of the innings, India struggled to reach 237/9 after the West Indies won the toss and opted to bowl in the second ODI in Ahmedabad.
Thereafter, the bowling attack, led by young Prasidh Krishna (9-3-12-4), made a fair use of whatever assistance was available from the Motera wicket in Ahmedabad, and courtesy the rival batsmen’s poor temperament and abysmal technique, bundled the visitors out for 193 in 46 overs to win the game by 44 runs and also seal the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.
In all fairness, batting certainly became easier in the second half. But Prasidh struck soon after captain Rohit Sharma brought him on to bowl.
Opener Brandon King, in spite of looking solid, played a silly shot to gift Prasidh his first wicket, but after that, the wickets the 25-year-old Karnataka quick yanked out were mostly owing to his ability to hit the deck hard, extract late movement and maintain a proper line and length.
Windies No.3 Darren Bravo was a victim of Prasidh’s excellent line and stand-in captain Nicholas Pooran, leading the visitors in the absence of regular skipper Kieron Pollard (ruled out with a niggle), was undone by a bit of awkward bounce.
All-rounder Odean Smith hit a few meaty blows later on to keep the Windies in the game, but the spineless showing by some of their more established batsmen left him with too much to do.
Earlier, with a new opening combination in the form of Rohit and Rishabh Pant, as Ishan Kishan made way for Rahul, India were in trouble at 47/3 after 15 overs. The likes of Kemar Roach, Alzarri Joseph and Odean, who struck twice in an over dismissing both Pant and Virat Kohli, made it all the more tougher for India, who could have been in bigger trouble had wicketkeeper Shai Hope not shelled a regulation catch to let Rahul off early.
