Bengal put up a pathetic batting display on the second day of their Ranji Trophy match to be bundled out for 199, in response to Mumbai's 412, at Eden Gardens on Saturday.

Veteran Anustup Majumdar showed his consistency with the bat with an unbeaten 108 while none of the others managed to provide any support. The next highest score for Bengal after Anustup was captain Manoj Tiwary's 36.

None of the young batters displayed the temperament and discipline to play first-class cricket. They went for their shots when the need of the hour was to stick around and show caution.

Anustup was a picture of patience and perseverance during his well-crafted innings but it hardly mattered since Bengal are in a battle for survival during the remaining two days. They will have to put up a solid resistance in the fourth innings to prevent Mumbai from walking away with full points.

"Anustup is an inspiration for all the youngsters. I hope the young players will learn a lot from this fighting innings of his," coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla said after the day's play.

Brief scores: Mumbai 412 (Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal 6/124). Bengal 199 (Anustup Majumdar 108 not out; Mohit Avasthi 3/63).
