The International Cricket Council may be forced to relocate the Champions Trophy if the Pakistan Cricket Board continues to oppose the hybrid model for India’s matches.
The world body decided to give the PCB more time and work on a feasible solution to end the impasse during its virtual board meeting on Friday.
The meeting — which was attended by ICC’s 12 full members and three associate nations, besides chairman Greg Barclay and CEO Geoff Allardice — was adjourned within 15 minutes following a stringent stand from the PCB.
The meeting is expected to be reconvened within the next 48 hours and back-channel talks are already on to solve the contentious issue, sources told The Telegraph.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Dubai ahead of the meeting on Friday and held discussions with the ICC brass. But with Naqvi refusing to relent once the hybrid model came up for discussion, the ICC had no option but to adjourn the meeting.
The PCB is understood to have sought time from theICC and could approach its government before a final call is taken.
The ICC has two options: India’s matches are held in the UAE, including the semi-final and the final if they make it, or the entire tournament is shifted elsewhere with Pakistan retaining the hosting rights.
The ICC is hoping to end the crisis by Saturday.“The ICC is trying to find a plausible solution. There is hope that some formula will be worked out before the board meets again,” a source told The Telegraph.
If the PCB agrees to the hybrid model, they will seek assurance from the ICC thatthey will also play all their matches in Sri Lanka during the 2026 T20 World Cup. India and Sri Lanka jointly hostthe tournament.
