ODI World Cup 2023: Australia and Sri Lanka target survival with first win

No doubt we haven’t been up to the standard that we like to hold. We’ve been off the mark and been outplayed both games, says Pat Cummins

Australia and Sri Lanka, the teams in a bit of a mess in the ongoing World Cup, will face each other on Monday in search of their first win of the tournament.

The scene is particularly bad for Australia, one of the pre-tournament favourites, after consecutive defeats to start the showpiece event. Not that the Lankans have done any better, losing both their matches so far.

While Australia suffered humiliating losses against India and South Africa, Sri Lanka faltered against the Proteas and Pakistan.

Will Australia wake up from their slumber? Captain Pat Cummins believes it is high time they do.

"Not an ideal start at all. Everyone's desperate to turn it around. We're obviously 0-2, so we've got to start winning and start winning quick. Every game now becomes almost like a final. You've got to win just about all of them," Cummins said on Sunday.

Australia, the five-time champions, sit ninth in the 10-team league table owing to their horrendous net run rate of -1.846, while the Lankans are 7th on the table with -1.161.

"No doubt we haven't been up to the standard that we like to hold. We've been off the mark and been outplayed both games. When we're at our best, we're putting big runs on the board. We're putting the pressure back into the opposition. So, we haven't been able to pull any of that together so far. So yeah, we know what makes us a really good team.

"Again, it wasn't that long ago. We're number one in the world. So, we don't have to look back too far to work out when we're playing our best," Cummins added.

Fact is, Australia have lost seven of their last eight ODIs comprehensively.

During this tournament, they have performed poorly in all three departments of the game. The Australians have dropped a whopping six catches in two games — the most by any team so far in this edition of the World Cup.

Sri Lanka have their own set of problems. While their batters have done decently so far, their bowlers have been wayward, failing to defend big totals.

On top of that, they have lost their regular skipper Dasun Shanaka due to a thigh injury. Kusal Mendis will lead the team.
