Barely a few hours after landing in Perth, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal got busy in an intense practice session at the Waca Stadium in Perth on Tuesday.
They were later joined by KL Rahul and Shubman Gill. The Indian team will face Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy following an embarrassing 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand at home.
The rest of the players, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, are expected to take the field on Wednesday.
Rohit Sharma hasn’t travelled with the side and his availability for the first Test is still uncertain.
The team management is learnt to have issued strict instructions to the Waca authorities that their practice sessions will not be open to the public. Fans and journalists will have no access to the arena during nets.
The batters’ precarious form is one of India’s main worries ahead of the series. Captain Rohit and Virat Kohli have been going through a slump and that has been one of the main reasons for their woeful performance against New Zealand.
India’s hopes largely depend on Pant and Jaiswal since their aggressive batting can be the right approach against the fiery Australian attack.
Waca head curator Isaac McDonald has already promised “really good pace, really good bounce and really good carry” on the wicket.
The Test pitch will be different compared to the one used during the recent ODI where Pakistan’s four-pronged pace attack ran through Australia’s line-up.
Not just Pat Cummins’ men, even the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will relish the conditions.
McSweeney was drafted into the squad after a slew of impressive performances in the Sheffield Shield and the ‘A’ series against India.
“There’s probably not (much I can do to replicate how Bumrah bowls). Obviously, he’s got a unique action. He’s one of the best bowlers in the world,” McSweeney said.
