New Zealand once again added a twist to their squad announcement for an ICC event.
Youngsters Matilda and Angus took the stage on Monday to announce the name of the Black Caps players for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Last year, the players’ families and children came together to make a video to reveal the same of those selected for the ODI World Cup.
There were no surprises in squad though. New Zealand will be led by Kane Williamson, for whom this will be the fourth T20 World Cup as the captain. Opener Devon Conway, recovering from a thumb injury, has been named in the 15-man provisional squad for the tournament in the USA and the Caribbean in June.
Bowler Matt Henry and batting all-rounder Rachin Ravindra are the only two members of the 15 without T20 World Cup experience.
This will be Williamson’s sixth appearance in a T20 World Cup. His experience is bettered only by Tim Southee, for whom this will be the seventh T20 World Cup squad. Seasoned Trent Boult, who opted out of a NZC central contract, has been selected in his fifth T20 World Cup squad.
The squad also boasts significant recent experience in the conditions with 13 of the 15-man group featuring in the team’s last tour to the West Indies in 2022.
