All-rounder Logan van Beek’s super over heroics powered the Netherlands to a famous win over the West Indies, who suffered their second consecutive ICC Men’s World Cup Qualifier defeat, here on Monday.

The result meant that the Dutch will take two crucial points into the Super Six stage that is next, while the Caribbean team will carry forward nothing after being also defeated by Zimbabwe in their previous game. The two-time champions’ qualifying hopes thus hang only by a thin thread.

After the scores were tied, Van Beek smashed 4, 6, 4, 6, 6, 4 to plunder 30 runs in the super over — the highest-ever in a one-over eliminator. In reply, the Windies managed only 8 runs losing two wickets. Van Beek, after flexing his muscles with the bat, did the trick with the ball too in the super over.

The Christchurch-born Van Beek has also represented New Zealand at the World U-19 Basketball Championships in 2009. He is also the grandson of Sammy Guillen, who played Test cricket for both the West Indies and New Zealand.

Before Van Beek took centre stage, it was Teja Nidamanuru (111 off 76 balls) and his captain Scott Edwards (67 off 47 balls) who helped the Netherlands finish on 374/9 in 50 overs after the West Indies had posted 374/6 with the help of Nicholas Pooran’s 104 not out off 65 balls. The Dutch duo shared a 143-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Interestingly, with just one run needed off the last ball for the Dutch to win, Van Beek had failed to pull it off as he was caught at mid-on by a diving Jason Holder. But Van Beek compensated for that and how!

In another match, Sean aWilliams’ swashbuckling 174 helped Zimbabwe beat USA by 304 runs.

Nottingham: Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner destroyed England’s rear guard to help the visitors win the one-off Test match at Trent Bridge by 89 runs on the fifth day on Monday, despite a battling half-century by Danni Wyatt.

England emerged at 116/5 chasing a target of 268 with Wyatt and Kate Cross at the crease, but Gardner’s devastating performance put paid to their hosts’ slim hopes of victory in a single session.

The off-spinner picked up all five final day wickets to go with the three she had on day four, beginning with getting Cross caught behind on 13 runs to deny England the start to the day they needed.

Amy Jones was next to depart, losing her wicket for four runs, after she charged down the pitch only to see Gardener’s delivery beat the outside edge and go through to Alyssa Healy, who completed the stumping despite a fumble.

Sophie Ecclestone was dismissed lbw for 10 runs before Gardner bowled Lauren Filer for a duck and wrapped up the victory by getting Wyatt (54) out lbw to finish with figures of eight for 66 in the innings and 12 for 165 in the match — both Australian women’s cricket records.

“I wouldn’t have dreamt of it but I guess it just shows that having five days in the test match is incredibly important,” said Gardner, who was named player of the match.

“As a bowling unit, we just said to keep the stumps in play as long as possible. It was just awesome to put a performance on for the team.”

The win gives holders Australia four points in their quest to retain the Ashes and the teams now move on to the three-match T20 International series that begins on July 1 at Edgbaston.

“I really thought we were going to do it, so I’m pretty disappointed,” Wyatt said. “There is a sense of missed opportunity. There are a lot of positives so we have to try to dust this down and smash them in the white ball stuff.”

Brief scores: Australia Women 473 & 257. England Women 463 & 178 (Ashleigh Gardner 8/66). Australia Women won by 89 runs.
