Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings will be under the guidance of new coaches in the next edition of the IPL. While the Mumbai franchise appointed former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Mark Boucher as the head coach, Punjab have roped in the much-experienced Trevor Bayliss.
The 45-year-old Boucher replaces former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who has been elevated to the role of global head of performance by the franchise. Boucher, who holds the record for the most Test dismissals by a wicketkeeper, will be stepping down from his current position as the head coach of the South Africa men’s national team after the upcoming T20 World Cup.
“It is an honour and privilege to be appointed as head coach of MI. Their history and achievements as a franchise clearly put them up there as one of the most successful sporting franchises in all of world sport,” Boucher was quoted as saying in a media release by the Mumbai Indians. “I look forward to the challenge and respect the need for results. It’s a strong unit with great leadership and players. I look forward to adding value to this dynamic unit,” he added.
Bayliss, on the other hand, will be replacing Anil Kumble in the Punjab set-up. Bayliss has the experience of winning the 2019 ODI World Cup with England, besides having two IPL titles (2012 and 2014 with Kolkata Knight Riders) under his belt. He also has a Big Bash League title with the Sydney Sixers. Punjab have never won the IPL crown. While the Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom in the last edition of the IPL, Punjab ended sixth.
