Mumbai Indians won’t risk playing Suryakumar Yadav unless he fully recovers from his finger injury, captain Rohit Sharma said. He also felt they should have chased down a target of 194 against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday.

“I thought they batted well to get to 193. (Jos) Buttler played an exceptional innings, we tried everything we could to get him out. But I thought 193 on that pitch could’ve been chased, especially when we needed 70 in 7 overs. But these things can happen. We can learn,” Rohit said.

Rohit harped on the “few” positives from the game. “(Jasprit) Bumrah’s bowling well. (Tymal) Mills as well. And Tilak (Varma) played exceptionally. And Ishan (Kishan)’s batting was terrific. I thought one of those two batting till the end would have made the difference,”he said.

Rohit, however, was non-committal on whether Surya was available for the next game on Wednesday. “He is a key player for us. Once he gets fit, he comes in straight but we want him to recover since finger injuries are tricky.”

Man of the Match Buttler, who scored the first century of IPL 2022, was a satisfied man.

“Feels fantastic to contribute to a win,” said the Rajasthan Royals centurion. “Was a bit nervous at the halfway mark, wondering if the innings will result in a win or not... I always have confidence coming into white-ball cricket, that’s where my strength is.”

Royals captain Sanju Samson said the trust in his bowlers paid off. “Have to show trust in your death bowlers and that’s what I had.”
