Jay Shah on Wednesday said there’s no questioning Rohit Sharma’s abilities as a captain and that he would lead the team to victory in the T20 World Cup.
“We couldn’t win the World Cup in 2023. But in the T20 World Cup, I’m sure under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, we’ll hoist the Indian flag (after the final) in Barbados,” the BCCI secretary said at the renaming of the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium to Niranjan Shah Stadium.
The T20 Cup starts June 4.
Speaking to a section of the media later, Shah added: “Rohit was captaining and came back for the Afghanistan T20I series after a year, which means we were going to let him continue forward.
“When Hardik (Pandya) was injured in the World Cup last year, who else could we have given the captaincy to... We all know he has the ability.”
Shah also confirmed that Hardik would be Rohit’s deputy in the T20 Cup.
Asked if Virat Kohli too would feature in India’s T20 Cup plans, Shah replied: “We’ll talk about him later... For someone who has been playing for 15 years, not without any reason has he taken a break. So, we should respect his decision.”
Shah also confirmed that the Board has sent out a directive to all top players to play domestic cricket.
