Both Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians would be looking to break the duck and register their first points in this IPL when they clash at the Ferozeshah Kotla in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The two teams, occupying the last two positions in the points table, have lost all their games so far. While Mumbai have lost two, the Capitals were beaten in all of their three matches to lie at rock bottom.
Given the juncture the two teams find themselves to be in, the onus is on Capitals’ skipper David Warner and his Mumbai counterpart Rohit Sharma to come up with a captain’s knock and lead from the front, which could be a source of inspiration for their teammates.
On his part, Warner isn’t dry of runs, having scored two 50-plus scores in his three innings and being one of the top run-getters so far in this edition. But what bothers the Capitals is his strike rate (117.03), which has hampered his team’s chances, especially in the Powerplay.
Another aspect that appears to have crippled Warner is getting no support from the other end as Prithvi Shaw, the other opener, has looked out of sorts against quality, disciplined bowling. Whether the Capitals draft in a new opening partner for Warner, though, remains to be seen.
On the other hand, Rohit has also been struggling with the bat and the five-time champions have badly missed the thrust he provides in the first six overs. After the defeat to Chennai Super Kings in Mumbai’s previous game, Rohit acknowledged the need for him and the rest of the seniors in his team to step up.
All that he needs is a couple of big strokes to regain his rhythm.
