India Women continued their embarrassing show with the bat to suffer their first-ever ODI defeat to Bangladesh Women in a 40-run loss (DLS method) in the opening game on Sunday.

Debutant seamer Amanjot Kaur’s four-wicket haul and the Indian team’s overall impressive bowling performance of restricting the hosts to 152 in 43 overs was undone by the batting unit. India were all out for 113 in 35.5 overs to trail 0-1 in the three-match series.

Such was the sorry state of affairs of the Indian team’s batting that Deepti Sharma’s 20 off 40 balls was the top score for the visitors, who seemed clueless before the Bangladeshi spin attack. Leg-spinner Rabeya Khan ran through the middle-order with figures of 3/30, while new-ball bowler Marufa Akter with 4/29 had the best figures.

“We didn’t take responsibility and bat well. While bowling too, we were not up to the mark,” skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said after the loss.

“Our batting hasn’t been up to the mark and we aren’t bowling to our strengths. We have done well in ODI cricket and we know how to bounce back,” Harmanpreet added.

Brief scores: Bangladesh Women 152/9 in 43 overs (N. Sultana 39; A. Kaur 4/31). India Women 113 in 35.5 overs (M. Akter 4/29).
