Close to seven years since his international debut, Shreyas Iyer knows well that the spotlight in this IPL will pretty much be on him too.

Currently in the news mostly for the wrong reasons, a successful IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders should help Shreyas make a statement to the Team India management and national selectors.

Fresher and looking forward to make an impact, Shreyas, back in his “forte”, doesn’t want to look too far ahead. Neither does he want to think much about what
the doctor has told him about his back.

“Right now, if I look at myself, I feel I’m in the best shape possible. I’ve been doing my training regularly, hitting the balls and batting for longer periods of time. So, that’s something I’m thriving on.

“I don’t want to think much about what the doctor has said and what the (back) injury was because, when you overthink and focus on the injury, you forget about what you’re doing the best at that moment. So, I want to put all these things aside and focus on what’s on the plate for me,” Shreyas said on Friday.

In other words, focusing on the present is what matters for the Knights’ captain now. “I feel that if you dwell too much into the future and the past, you tend to overthink and you make a lot of mistakes.

“I just want to keep doing my work and see to it that I do it right. And if I even do it wrong, I want to learn from it and ensure I don’t repeat that,” Shreyas emphasised.

For that matter, the T20 World Cup, beginning on June 4, just days after the IPL ends, also isn’t occupying too much space on Shreyas’ mind, he clearly stated.
