Shubman Gill doesn't panic when he goes dry on runs, he just goes back to basics and follows the template that works for him.
The young opener had scores of 3, 7 and 6 in the first three T20Is against the West Indies. But in favourable batting conditions in Lauderhill in the US, Gill returned to runs with a 47-ball 77 in the fourth game on Saturday.
He, however, was once again dismissed cheaply in the fifth and final match on Saturday, falling for just 9.
Speaking after Saturday's T20I, Gill explained his thought process when out of form.
"In the first three matches, I could not even score 10, today (Saturday) the wicket was a bit better, so wanted to capitalise. Then when I got a good start, just wanted to finish it," Gill said during a conversation with teammate Arshdeep Singh.
"The T20 format is like that. When you have three-four matches where a good shot is caught by the fielder, and you are eyeing quick runs, you don't have time to think much... It's important to go to your basics. You just look at what your template was when you were consistently scoring runs.
"You have to identify whether you are making any mistake. I felt I wasn't making mistakes in any of the three matches. But I couldn't convert my starts," he added.
Gill and his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal cashed in on the conditions to stitch a 165-run partnership and lead India to a nine-wicket win.
Like Gill, Jaiswal (5) too could not score much in Sunday's T20I.
